film fridays: a personal project where I put down my digital camera and share images created on film.

Time to count my blessings.

It’s true. Sometimes I can be a, “If only”, type of girl always yearning for more. If only I could make my dreams a reality…. If only I had more money… If only my butt were smaller and bra size larger…  ; ) Don’t get me wrong, I’m not unhappy but the insatiable desire for more out of life is ever present.

Once in a while, though, I have a moment of enlightenment. It can be an insignificant moment when it hits me, like sitting in the backyard watching my kids play. And at that moment my life (cheese alert) takes my breath away. Look at what I have! Two beautiful, healthy and amazing kids. A husband that is loving and supportive. A job! Good friends, family and health. A creative outlet which, at the risk of sounding trite, saves me. Photography keeps me sane and maintains a fire in my belly that not everyone has in life. The universe has been good to me. How dare I ever complain or want more? I should drop down on my knees every day and thank my lucky stars for what I have. Sure, things aren’t perfect but I am fortunate. I am grateful.  Life is good.

A few years ago I read the book The Power of Now and ever since I’ve tried to apply it’s message: Live life in the present moment. It’s actually really hard to do. The mind so easily slips into regretful thoughts of the past or worries of the future. We do it subconsciously all the time. But until you can give full attention to your life at this very moment in time, you are preventing yourself from achieving true happiness. Think about how much time we waste worrying about what we can not change or control. I want to live in the now and completely appreciate every moment of my life. Yet, continue to grow and push my life forward. A wise woman once told me, Be happy with what you have while working for what you want. I like that.
