It never ceases to amaze me how much I love photographing families. It’s not the easiest thing in the world either, trust me, since the shortest subjects typically run the show. Some photographers even prefer not to photograph families because it’s so unpredictable and well, hard! I guess I love it so much because I am right there with these families. I’m at the same place in life and I understand the chaos. I understand the wacked out feelings of wanting to strangle and cuddle someone all within a 5 minute time frame (several times a day). I get it. It’s relentless. It’s tiring. But by the same token, there is no other place you would rather be. That determination families have is what attracts me to them, I guess. That “do or die” attitude they must have and the never ending hopefulness parents have for their children that everything is going to be ok. Families may not be the easiest subjects to photograph and I might not get every shot I want but family connection is fascinating to me and I love to be around it.
Adding another layer of awesome to photographing families is when you get to photograph someone you’ve known your entire life! This is my sweet cousin and her little family whom I photographed this summer in Louisiana at my Grandparents house. I had the biggest smile on my face when I got the film back. : )
